Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Well, I’ve been tempted to watch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but decided to read the book first. My paperback copy came in right after Christmas, at about the same time I got sick, so I just finished the novel, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, by Steig Larsson.

It’s a slow-burning, investigative journalism type novel featuring the dark and fascinating computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, who helps crack a long forgotten murder.

Now, I’m ready to follow up by watching the original subtitled film. Then I’ll feel ready to go watch the newly released film.

Day 4, 2011

Meet the daring and adventurous Detroit based gaMes training test crew. This is the elite Alpha team. They take the bumps to make the way for the rest of us.

Day 3, 2011

I’m sitting here watching the news and saw this image of a clock on the television.

TimeSlipsAway

Time certainly slips away. I’m watching the news because my daughter’s flight was delayed. Right now she is flying in to Detroit from Tennessee. She’s on her way to Ann Arbor to start her second semester at the University of Michigan. Somewhere between her curly piggy tails and now she became a really fun thinker and writer. I follow her musings on her Voxtropolis blog, “Converge, Convalesce”, where she writes about music, fashion, and philosophy. I’m looking forward to introducing you to her ideas when we launch the new Vox site at the beginning of next month.

Time to go. See you in the Mystic…

Day 2, 2011

A while back I took Niza, my wife, and Lucas, my son, to visit the gatherings of a young church planter I’m working with in Detroit. My wife, Niza, instantly connected with their vibe and determined to harness her creative energies there (Awakenings Movement Detroit).

It turns out that Day 2 of 2011 is a Sunday. So here’s a shot of Lucas (aka DJ Maudib), who DJs his original beats at Awakenings every chance he gets, with three curious onlookers.

Here’s a shot of an Awakenings Movement personality…a Dad, wearing a red sweater, with his son hanging from his hands in the bottom of the shot. Niza was handing out programs as people came in and is blurred in the distant background. The shot is really about the father and son and I love how the blurring of the space both in front and behind of my subject serve to make him stand out.

Day 1, 2011

Welcome back. You belong here.
I moved to Michigan last year and love it. That’s nothing new for me. I’ve loved everywhere I’ve lived.

People make a place. Sometimes we say that because the place itself is lacking. That’s not the case here. Michigan can feel lonely, with its cold and magically quiet winters, but there is beauty here. Continue reading »

Losing Weight and Saving the Universe

The strangeness of my life hit me in a weird way today. I was taking a morning run. I’m trying to get back in shape and lose weight. I just need to do this.

At the same time, as I pick up the pace of my walk to increase my heart rate, my thoughts are filled with the practical matters of running a household — pay the medical, take Erica to School, get Lucas to do his math, the car needs oil, how do I get Erica a harp, don’t forget to order Lucas’ birthday presents, etc. Continue reading »
