Day 3, 2011

I’m sitting here watching the news and saw this image of a clock on the television.

TimeSlipsAway

Time certainly slips away. I’m watching the news because my daughter’s flight was delayed. Right now she is flying in to Detroit from Tennessee. She’s on her way to Ann Arbor to start her second semester at the University of Michigan. Somewhere between her curly piggy tails and now she became a really fun thinker and writer. I follow her musings on her Voxtropolis blog, “Converge, Convalesce”, where she writes about music, fashion, and philosophy. I’m looking forward to introducing you to her ideas when we launch the new Vox site at the beginning of next month.

Time to go. See you in the Mystic…

Day 2, 2011

A while back I took Niza, my wife, and Lucas, my son, to visit the gatherings of a young church planter I’m working with in Detroit. My wife, Niza, instantly connected with their vibe and determined to harness her creative energies there (Awakenings Movement Detroit).

It turns out that Day 2 of 2011 is a Sunday. So here’s a shot of Lucas (aka DJ Maudib), who DJs his original beats at Awakenings every chance he gets, with three curious onlookers.

Here’s a shot of an Awakenings Movement personality…a Dad, wearing a red sweater, with his son hanging from his hands in the bottom of the shot. Niza was handing out programs as people came in and is blurred in the distant background. The shot is really about the father and son and I love how the blurring of the space both in front and behind of my subject serve to make him stand out.

That’s Day 2, 2011. See you in the Mystic…

Day 1, 2011

Welcome back. You belong here.
I moved to Michigan last year and love it. That’s nothing new for me. I’ve loved everywhere I’ve lived.

People make a place. Sometimes we say that because the place itself is lacking. That’s not the case here. Michigan can feel lonely, with its cold and magically quiet winters, but there is beauty here. Continue reading »

“Hybrid Church”

priusToday on “ALL Things M” I’m interviewing pastor Dave Browning about his new book “Hybrid Church”.

I’ve written two articles on (more or less) the same subject. They should complement today’s conversation.

Enjoy.

What’s comes after the Laptop?

I’m thinking about what’s after the laptop, after the ipad, after the iphone. The video below is a pico projector — a tiny LCD projector that is already available in South Korea and China and will be become widely available soon. But what next? Perhaps eyeglasses that let you see your computer screen and keyboard semi-transparently superimposed over the world around you?

And Man Made Life

And Man Made Life

The title of today’s post is the same as the title of the latest edition of the magazine, The Economist. Their full title is: And Man Made Life: the first artificial organism and its consequences.

A new world emerged recently and many of us missed it. On Thursday, May 20, 2010 the journal Science published an important announcement. For the first time since Genesis chapter 1, life has been created.
